“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Gal. 6:14
Letter to Sister Berenice Fanfani
January 22, 1850
My dearest daughter in Jesus,
I don’t deserve to be obeyed, but your soul deserves to be adorned with such a beautiful virtue. Beloved daughter in Jesus, I ask you to do it for love of God. Speak of Jesus crucified and draw souls to love him. Do that in a beautiful way, humbly, lovingly, patiently, etc. Tell Jesus often that you love him very much and that you want to die for his love.
Behold our love, Jesus. Behold our life, Jesus. Behold our all, Jesus! Let us accompany Jesus in all his ways. When we are alone, then let it be with Jesus in the solitude of Bethlehem. When we are travelling, let it be journeying with Jesus in Palestine and on the way to Calvary. When we are lashed by critical tongues, behold us scourged with Jesus. When we are fixed on the cross, then we are crucified with Jesus — and so on.
Always, always with Jesus! God always in view, Jesus in our actions, our life in sacrifice.
With Jesus, let us think; with Jesus, let us speak. Let us labor with Jesus, let us rest with Jesus. With Jesus let us weep, with Jesus let us keep silence. Let us pray with Jesus. With Jesus let us live, with Jesus let us die. May Jesus live in our minds. May Jesus live on our tongues. May Jesus live in our hearts. May Jesus live in our souls. May Jesus live at all times. May Jesus live in all places. May Jesus live in all hearts. Yes, let us always say, “May Jesus live!”
• During this week follow Jesus along the way of the cross. Unite yourself with Him in your sufferings and be happy because you are part of this. Give thanks!
• Prayer: My Jesus, teach me that, like Maria De Mattias, I can recognize my journey in your journey. Teach me to be proud of you alone and of what you are doing in my life in the mystery of the cross. Amen!
