A Sequence expands and explains the deep mysteries of a liturgical feast. The PENTECOST sequence is a soul hymn from the deepest realities of our spiritual journey. At the altar, we are witnesses to the Spirit who blesses and makes holy, not only the bread and wine, but our lives. Through the Spirit, our ordinary events and relationships become holy encounters.
We pray to the Spirit: COME, COME, COME, COME—from heaven and from deep within us–to strengthen, to refresh, to light, to heal, to bend, to melt, to guide ‘our inmost being’ so we will not ‘go astray.’ Let these words and images descend upon our hearts and fill us with joy! Can we pray, with an open and free heart: COME, HOLY SPIRIT, COME!
Come, Holy Spirit, come!
And from your celestial home
Shed a ray of light divine!
Come, Father of the poor!
Come, source of all our store!
Come, within our bosoms shine.
You, of comforters the best;
You, the soul’s most welcome guest;
Sweet refreshment here below;
In our labor, rest most sweet;
Grateful coolness in the heat;
Solace in the midst of woe.
O most blessed Light divine,
Shine within these hearts of yours,
And our inmost being fill!
Where you are not, we have naught,
Nothing good in deed or thought,
Nothing free from taint of ill.
Heal our wounds, our strength renew;
