The prophet Isaiah wrote, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”
And John, the messenger of God, proclaimed to all the people who came to him in the wilderness that they must repent of their sins and be baptized. Many people heard his message, repented, and were baptized in the river Jordan.
John the Baptist is the one calling us to get ourselves right with God and turn our lives in another direction. He’s a radical reminder that we can change. We can start anew. John’s hand reaches out to pull us to something better, a place of security and hope.
To accept the Message from this Sacred Scripture is to admit our weakness, our frailty and take step to live reconciliation. This is an important way during Advent to make ourselves ready for Christ.
Advent is about getting ready for Christ. To prepare the way of the Lord! Christ wants nothing more than to dwell in our hearts.
The John Baptist’s cry in the desert is nothing less than a call to conversion. He’s offering us a second chance.
