“But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord. I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people. All, from least to greatest, shall know me, said the Lord, for I will forgive their evildoing and remember their sin no more.” (Jeremiah 31:33-34)

God has an issue with long term memory loss and because he does we are blessed. We cannot even comprehend that he would remember our sins no more because we never seem to forget them because we haven’t learned to let them go. We wear them like an albatross around our hearts. Even when we have received forgiveness in the sacrament of Reconciliation some of us hold on to the guilt. Not our God. Once we sincerely seek forgiveness of our sin it is gone from the memory of our Creator.

A woman once said that she prayed and prayed for her son who had fallen away from the church. She said that she would storm heaven and bemoan the fact that she could not seem to influence this son. Then one time while she was carrying on in prayer she heard a voice that simply said, “He is my son too.” From that point on she was able to let go of her concern knowing that her boy was in the hands of his Father. She let go of her concern about his possible sin and simply loved him.

I think that this is the same God we find here in Jeremiah, a God who is watching out for all the sons and daughters. We have a compassionate God who knows our weaknesses and loves us all the more because of them. This God goes ‘all in’ for this rag tag remnant of people and it doesn’t matter how far afield from him they go they are still his children. When they come home all is forgotten, really forgotten.
This passage from Jeremiah is a love song between a God and his people. The law of love is planted in their hearts and the gift of relationship with their God is established as an intimate and caring one. Today let us live like we know we are loved and forgiven. Let today be the first day of real freedom.

Questions for Reflection:
1. Do I carry forgiven sins around needlessly? Why?
2. What would help me to let go of my guilt?

Prayer: God of Forgiveness, help me to let the memory of my sins fade away. Amen.
